Turn a family memory into a bedtime story, with or without AI

Parent Journey · LiNael Production · 3 min read

An original story template, a worked example and a clear distinction between real memories and invented tales. No paid AI feature is required.

The short answer

To create a personalised bedtime story, start with an ordinary event, choose a fictional character and add a small obstacle followed by a comfortable resolution. Keep the factual memory separate from the story. AI is optional, and generation is disabled in the free Parent Journey app.

Keep the memory and the story separate

A family record describes what happened as accurately as you can. Fiction can introduce a dragon, move the scene or let a shoe speak. Keeping two texts prevents an invented detail from being mistaken for a real event years later.

Start with a plain note: “We searched for a red boot before going out. It was under the table.” That is the memory. Label the other text “Fiction inspired by our search for the boot”.

Use a small plot

Choose a character, a wish, a manageable obstacle and a resolution. Offer your child two ideas if they would like to help. They do not have to play themselves: an imaginary character creates distance from a moment that may have felt embarrassing.

Original fictional example: “In the village of puddles, a little red boot wanted to hear the rain. But its partner had disappeared. It asked the broom, who knew every corner of the house, for help. Together they found the other boot asleep beneath the table. At last the pair went outside to listen to the drops, one step after another.”

You can finish there. Another surprise or an explicit lesson is not compulsory. Ask whether your child would like to change any part of the tale.

If you use an outside AI tool, simplify the input

UNICEF updated its guidance on AI and children’s rights in December 2025, including privacy and transparency. For this exercise, avoid supplying family photographs, voices or detailed personal histories when fictional ingredients will do.

Example prompt: “Write a short story about two boots trying to find each other. Include no real person, identifiable location or frightening scene. End with their walk in gentle rain.” This is an editorial suggestion, not a guarantee about an AI tool’s output.

Read the result before sharing it

Check the language, situations, portrayals and ending. Remove anything that does not suit your family. If your child dislikes a story based on their day, choose a different subject rather than insisting.

The current free version of Parent Journey keeps the written, audio or photographic memory that inspires a story. It does not generate the tale. Use the template to write it yourself in a document or notebook of your choice. Reading together requires neither a paid service nor uploading personal material to AI.

A memory becomes a separate story

  1. Fact

The boot was found under the table.

  2. Fiction

Two boots become the story’s characters.

  3. Review

The family chooses suitable words and an ending.

Fictional example: the invented tale never replaces the factual journal entry.

Common questions

Can I use my child’s real name?

For a text kept privately, choose the wording that suits your family. In a prompt sent to an outside service, a fictional name or animal character avoids supplying an unnecessary identity.

Does free Parent Journey generate the story?

No. AI generation is disabled. The journal can preserve the source memory; this template helps you write the fictional story yourself.
