A yearly family photo album: twelve chapters without photo quotas

Organise a year by month or theme, with useful captions and a selection that gives each picture room.
The short answer
Start a yearly album with twelve folders or chapters, then select the scenes before choosing photographs. Add the context each picture leaves out. A month without images can remain empty or be represented by a written memory.
Choose a thread before a layout
Tell the year by month, season or theme: meals, outings, people you met. Use the structure that helps you find memories again. Twelve chapters are a convenient framework, not a requirement to fill twelve spreads.
Begin on paper with headings alone. Combine months if you have few records. The album does not need to suggest that you photographed every week.
Select in two passes
First gather candidates in a working folder. Then choose the image that best tells each scene. Remove duplicates from the selection without automatically deleting original files.
For a park visit, a group picture can identify the people while a detail explains the game. Ten nearly identical views rarely provide ten different pieces of information. Ask participants what they want included or left out. Their selection may differ from the photograph you consider technically best.
Write what the picture cannot explain
A useful caption can answer who, roughly when and why the moment matters. This fictional example adds a small story: “One Sunday in April, we tried Nora’s recipe. The first biscuits disappeared before the photograph.”
If you cannot recover the date, say so. Separate comments written today from words spoken at the time. For a shared edition, omit unnecessary personal details and check that the people shown are comfortable with the intended audience.
Keep files suited to their purpose
Keep originals for your archive and any future printing. Compressed copies prepared for an application may not be the best source for a large print. Check an actual-size preview before placing any optional order.
A free album can be an organised folder with a caption document or a PDF created with software you already have. Parent Journey helps tell memory stories; it does not currently manufacture printed photo books.

Common questions
How many photographs should each month contain?
There is no ideal number. Pick images that contribute something different. A written memory can represent a period without photographs.
Do I need to buy a photo book?
No. An organised folder or readable document is enough to start for free. Printing is an optional, separate choice.
