Back up family photos and voices with a checkable plan

Separate syncing from backups and test a photograph, recording and written entry before assuming your memories are protected.
The short answer
A useful family backup holds independent copies of photographs, recordings and captions, with a playback check. A synced folder is not always enough because deletions may propagate. Export a small set, test it and then repeat the method for more memories.
Identify what would be difficult to recreate
A photograph may exist on two phones while a voice message exists only inside one app. List where memories live and what would disappear if a device were lost. Include the writing that explains the pictures.
Begin with one written entry, one photograph and one recording. This small set tests the whole process. A completed download does not yet prove that the contents are complete or readable.
Separate syncing from an independent copy
Synchronisation generally keeps locations consistent. Depending on the service and settings, changes or deletions may spread between them. A dated copy kept separately can preserve an earlier state. Check the actual behaviour rather than assuming that “cloud” means backup.
The Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr guide updated in February 2026 recommends regular copies and verification. A family version can combine export, playback checks and storage in a private location.
Test the contents, not just the archive
Open the compressed file after downloading it. Find the written entry, display the picture and play the audio. Compare them with the original memory. Is a photograph missing? Does the recording belong to the right event? Does its caption still provide enough context?
Keep a small record of the date, selection, destination and test result. Fictional example: “8 September · summer · family drive · photo, voice and text opened.” That distinguishes an intention to back up from a copy you have actually checked.
Choose a manageable rhythm
An important event may deserve a copy immediately after selection. For other memories, choose a schedule you can sustain. Protect exports as you would the originals: a family journal archive should not land in a public folder by default.
Parent Journey offers a complete archive from account settings. It contains the journal and its media; keep it outside the application. Automatic archive import is not currently available. Exported files can be checked and read, but rebuilding a journal inside the application is a separate operation.
Do not overwrite your only previous copy before validating the new one. A simple, checked plan is more useful than many archives whose contents nobody understands.

Common questions
Is a ZIP file enough as a backup?
It is useful if it is complete, readable and stored separately. Having a ZIP alone guarantees neither the contents nor future availability.
Does Parent Journey automatically restore exports?
No. Exports contain readable files, but the free launch has no automatic import. Check this limitation before deleting an account.
