Make a family time capsule with paper and digital memories

Choose a few records of today, preserve them and arrange a future opening without relying on a paid service.
The short answer
A family time capsule can combine a letter, a captioned photograph, a short recording and a description of an everyday object. Record who prepared it, where copies are kept and how to open it. A symbolic date is not a preservation plan.
Start with a shared question
Ask: “What would we like to explain about our current life to our future selves?” This helps select meaningful records without collecting every file you own.
You might include a letter, a chosen photograph, a short list of favourites and a recording made with permission. Describe or photograph an object instead of putting it in a box if it is fragile, perishable or needed in everyday life.
Make the selection understandable
Adapt this starting list:
- A photograph with its date, people and context.
- A letter describing an ordinary scene.
- Three current expressions or habits.
- A short recording with a transcript or clearly labelled summary.
- A note identifying the capsule’s makers and intended readers.
The quantities are suggestions. If someone does not want to appear, represent the period another way. Do not add a secret about another person simply because the planned opening is far away.
Consider readers and storage
For paper, choose an appropriate storage place. Burying a box is not a requirement. For digital files, keep formats you can open with available tools and check their readability regularly.
Add a simple guide: filenames, devices or software currently used to open them, and the location of another copy. Do not put account passwords in a box intended to circulate between several people.
The Library of Congress family preservation guide, updated in July 2026, helps frame these documents as records to pass on. Longevity depends on maintaining copies and storage media, not only on putting them away initially.
Plan an achievable opening
Choose a date or event, then set a reminder in a calendar you already use. Identify someone who will know how to find the capsule if your devices or habits change.

Keep an independent copy and arrange transmission yourself. You can open the capsule sooner if the family wishes. Its value does not depend on keeping an elaborate promise, and checking digital copies need not spoil the eventual shared reading.

Must we wait ten years to open a capsule?
No. Choose a meaningful, realistic point. One year, a move or a family gathering can all work.
How do we avoid depending on one application?
Keep an independent copy of text and media with reading instructions. Check that it opens outside the service before considering it preserved.
